Read 1 Kings 21:1 through 22:50; Luke 20:27—47
Jenni ran for school board because she wanted to make a difference in her school system. She worked hard and even became the chairperson. People recognized her wherever she went. They paid attention to what she said, and she was asked to be the speaker at functions. Not until after she was off the board, did she realize just how much she enjoyed the attention. She had come to depend on it to boost her self-esteem. When she realized what had happened, she repented of depending on others for her value instead of on God.
“They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets” (Luke 20:46).
Jenni fell into the same trap that the Jewish teachers did in Jesus’ time. It fed their egos to receive honor from others. It can true of Christians today too. However, Christ gave His life for humanity. That gives everyone value. Nothing else is needed.
Challenge for Today: Examine your life to see what you depend on for self-esteem.
Quicklook: Luke 20:45–47
