Read Mark 8:1 through 9:50
“I really started to grow up once I learned to put others ahead of myself,” Frank stated as he talked to his teenage son about what it meant to be an adult.
Frank’s advice proves correct to all those who learn that self-denial is a apart of maturity. Jesus taught that it is also an important part of becoming a disciple.
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34).
Jesus taught His followers that His purpose in this world meant that He would be rejected, suffer, and die. He would then rise to life again in three days. Peter took Jesus aside to correct Him about “these wrong ideas.” However, Jesus turned this rebuke into a strong statement of what it meant to follow Him. Those who accept Christ’s challenge to follow Him find that they gain far more than they would every give up. Though the Lord calls people to set aside selfish desires, He offers blessings far surpassing any personal sacrifice.
Challenge for Today: Take up your cross and follow the Lord wherever He leads.
