Breakdown/Breakthrough

Read Joel 1:1 through 3:21

Despite claims that the Christian life should be all peaks and no valleys, seasoned believers know better, both by experience and their understanding of God’s Word. Many of the greatest promises in Scripture came after a time of trial or judgment. The rainbow came after the Flood. “I know the plans I have for you” (Jeremiah 29:11) came after seventy years of captivity. “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5) came after Jesus predicted His death. Today’s passage holds another such promise:

“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions” (Joel 2:28).

This great promise—quoted on the miraculous Day of Pentecost—appears in the Book of Joel following a prophecy about a time of judgment. People must repent if they want God to relent and respond with mercy and grace. Breakdown is often the prerequisite for breakthrough.

Prayer Suggestion: God, help me to be broken so I can be remade as You desire.
